DELHI: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) celebrated the International Day for Women in Maritime here on Saturday, honouring the vital contributions of women seafarers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme, “Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” underscores the importance of the safety and security of women in the maritime sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the event, a total of 27 female seafarers hailing from different maritime institutes and pursuing diverse degrees in the maritime field were honored for their unwavering commitment and noteworthy contributions to the maritime industry. Additionally, several professionals from the field were also acknowledged for their remarkable dedication. These women showcase the fortitude and perseverance necessary to succeed in a field that has historically been dominated by men, and their accomplishments are forging a path for future generations of women in the maritime industry, said Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Directorate General of Shipping had approximately 1,699 registered women seafarers in 2014, which has now increased to 10,440 in 2023, reflecting an increase of 514 per cent in the registered women Indian seafarers.
