Over 100 schools in Delhi-NCR receive bomb hoax emails; LG seeks report

NEW DELHI: At least five schools in Delhi received bomb threats via email on Wednesday morning, police officials said.

The Delhi Public School at Dwarka, the Sanskriti School in Chanakyapuri, the Delhi Public School at Vasant Kunj, the Amity School in Saket, and the Mother Mary School at Mayur Vihar are among the schools confirmed to have received bomb threats via email, police said.

The threats to the Delhi schools come months after a similar incident in Bengaluru, which saw over 45 schools receive bomb hoaxes via email towards the end of 2023.

Search operations are under way, and many schools have already been evacuated. Bomb detection and disposal teams and firefighter personnel have been stationed at the spot, said the police.

“Schools in Delhi are being evacuated on an emergency basis. The teacher called up, asking me to pick up my son. Our neighbourhood school is also being evacuated. Chaos all over,” wrote one user. Others said that they got to know about the situation at the last minute.

DCP South West Rohit Meena told the media that during the initial investigation, it seems that since yesterday, the threat mail has been sent to many places. The date line is not mentioned in the mail, which means one mail has been sent to many places.

“We got information that the same email was sent to several schools at around 4:15 am. An investigation is being done. We made a decision to close the schools and send the students back home. Checking is underway at all the schools, and our technical wing is investigating the email. Through the initial investigation, it seems that this is a mass emai,” he said, urging students and parents to remain calm and not panic.

Situation under control: Minister Atishi

As panic gripped the national capital, Delhi Minister Atishi assured parents through an X post that the situation was under control.

She wrote on X: “Some schools have received bomb threats this morning. Students have been evacuated, and those premises are being searched by Delhi police. So far, nothing has been found in any of the schools. We are in constant touch with the police and the schools. Would request parents and citizens not to panic. School authorities will be in touch with parents wherever needed.”
