Goa top summer destination; Puri, Varanasi lead in pilgrims: MakeMyTrip

Goa's 103 km coastline is blessed with the most enchanting beaches caressed by the Arabian Sea

Goa is the top choice for Indian tourists during the summer season, with Udaipur and Srinagar showing the largest surge in internet search activity compared to the same period last year, said MakeMyTrip (MMT) on Wednesday.

“Summer is always one of the biggest quarters of the year in terms of travel intent, and this year too, the buoyancy in the sector continues. We are observing healthy growth in searches over those recorded last year at this time,” said Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group chief executive officer (CEO), MakeMyTrip.

With India going to the polls, a surge in traffic and bookings on redBus has also emerged, as “people prioritise visiting their hometowns to cast votes,” he added.

According to the most recent report from the online travel company, the top 20 domestic destinations, which collectively make up 45 percent of online searches during the months of March and April in the Financial Year 2024, consist of:

Most searched pilgrimage destinations 

Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which is considered the mythical birthplace of Rama, a principal deity of Hinduism

* Puri and Varanasi, whereas Ayodhya maintained steady growth.

Some of the domestic destinations that have experienced high growth in online searches compared to last year are:  Lakshadweep, Nandi Hills (Bengaluru), Chalakudy, Marayoor (Kerala), Chevella (Telangana), Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh), Jibhi (Himachal Pradesh), Chakrata (Uttarakhand), Sonamarg (Jammu and Kashmir), Ganpatipule (Maharashtra), Purulia (West Bengal), Khatu (Rajasthan), Dwarka (Gujarat) and Thiruvannamalai (Tamil Nadu).

Dubai tops international travel trends 

Approximately 64 percent of global searches were focused on 20 destinations, which closely resembled the list from the previous year.

Among international destinations, while Dubai remains the top choice, Baku in Azerbaijan, Almaty in Kazakhstan, and Nagoya in Japan are recording the highest growth in searches. Next come Luxembourg, Langkawi, and Antalya.

Most preferred accommodations

The family travel sector experienced 20 per cent growth in comparison to the summer of 2023, according to the MMT report. Solo travel also saw a 10 percent increase. Accommodations such as homestays and villas, ranging from Rs 2,500 to Rs 7,000 per night, still make up 45 percent of total bookings.
