DELHI: On World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on Friday, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a prominent telecom R&D center under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, unveiled two distinctive initiatives.
These initiatives, namely the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) and the Scheme for Transformational and Advanced Research in Sciences (STARS), have been introduced with the objective of promoting the advancement of indigenous telecom solutions and technologies.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Communications, these initiatives aim at fostering a culture of collaborative innovation for the advancement of indigenous development by partnering with academia, startups, and industries to jointly create telecom products and solutions that cater to the telecommunications requirements of India in key strategic, rural, and nationally significant sectors.
In India, women are making significant progress in various fields within ICT and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), actively contributing to software development, engineering, and technology. In order to foster entrepreneurship and innovation, C-DOT has introduced a programme called ‘NIDHI’, said the statement.

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)-recognized startups led by women can now apply for the ‘NIDHI’ programme, which offers essential support, including funding and assistance, to the top 10 selected startups. This will include an initial grant of Rs 10 lakh each, access to well-furnished office space for a period of six months, access to tools and lab facilities, mentorship from C-DOT technical leaders, and an opportunity for future collaboration under the C-DOT Collaborative Research Programme, it stated.

Under the ‘STARS’ (Scheme for Transformational and Advanced Research in Sciences) programme, C-DOT offers scholarships to PhD students (one each) from the top 20 NIRF (National Institute Ranking Framework) ranking engineering institutes. The selected scholar will receive Rs 6 lakh per annum for a maximum of four years.
The selected students will receive mentorship from esteemed research leaders at C-DOT and will have access to the laboratory facilities, it added.

The scholarship approval letters were issued to 12 PhD students from Anna University, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Thapar University, NIT Surathkal, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Indore, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Delhi on the occasion.
