The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Maharashtra and coastal and north interior Karnataka over the next five days. Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Northwest India over the next two days.

Meteorological factors contributing to these conditions include a shear zone along 16°N in the lower and middle tropospheric levels, a cyclonic circulation over south Telangana and neighboring areas, and a trough extending from south Maharashtra to the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast.

Under these influences, IMD said, “Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph), is expected over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, and Lakshadweep. Isolated light to moderate rainfall is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next five days.”

“Specifically, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated over Kerala and Mahe from June 7-9, South Interior Karnataka from June 7-9, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on June 7, Telangana on June 7 and 10, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on June 7, 2024. Isolated, very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Mahe on June 7 and 8, 2024,” IMD added.

Additionally, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal and North Interior Karnataka from June 7–11. Isolated places in these regions, as well as in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana, are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A yellow alert, indicating moderate rain, has been issued for several other districts.
