GANGTOK: Prem Singh Tamang, the president of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), took the oath as the chief minister of the state at a ceremony held at Paljor Stadium here on Monday. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to him.
Tamang (56), better known as P S Golay, was re-elected as the chief minister of the Himalayan state for a second consecutive term. His party retained power by a landslide majority of 31 seats in the 32-member assembly.
The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), the opposition party that held power in the state for a consecutive 25 years until 2019, could secure only one seat.
Along with Tamang, 11 cabinet ministers also took the oath. They are: Sonam Lama, Arunkumar Upreti, Samdup Lepcha, Bhim Hang Limboo, Bhojraj Rai, G T Dhungel, Puran Kumar Gurung, Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, Nar Bahadur Dahal, Raju Basnett, and Tshering Thendup Bhutia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Prem Singh Tamang on taking the oath as the CM of Sikkim. In his message, Modi wished him a fruitful tenure, saying he looks forward to working with him for Sikkim’s progress.
