Boat capsizes in Odisha’s Mahanadi River leaving 2 dead, 7 missing

BHUBANESWAR (ODISHA): Two people were killed and seven others, including four women and three children, went missing as a boat in which they were traveling capsized in Mahanadi River in Jharsuguda district of Odisha on Friday, police said. 
The boat carrying around 50 people was moving from Patharseni Kuda to Banjipalli in Bargarh district when the incident took place. They were said to be returning after a visit to a temple at Patharseni Kuda in Bargarh district. The boat capsized when it was about to reach Sarada Ghat in Jharsuguda. Local fishermen who swung into action rescued 35 passengers and brought them to the bank. The fire service personnel, along with the police, managed to rescue another seven passengers. A search is on for seven passengers who are still missing, according to the police.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of the deceased.
