SRINAGAR: Incessant rains continued to pound parts of Kashmir on Sunday too, throwing normal life out of gear. Srinagar, the summer capital of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has been facing severe waterlogging as the city roads in many areas are dug up for development works. Cloged drains in some areas added to the problems.
Commuters had a tough time wading through the waterlogged roads, which led to traffic jams in many areas. Residents of low-lying areas spent sleepless nights removing water from their houses. Downtown areas like Batamaloo, Khanyar, Makhdoom Sahib, Nowpora, Khawaja Bazar, Nowhatta, Bemina, and Hawal are badly hit. Water was overflowing on the roads due to the clogging of drains.
As the city is witnessing fast-phased development these days, road and infrastructure upgradation works are going on in various places. The Srinagar Smart City Project is a major one among them. Material stocked on roads for such works has also been causing problems for commuters amid the rain.
A long line of vehicles, including those of tourists, stuck in traffic jams could be seen on roads in many parts.
“We had a tough time passing through the Srinagar city roads during the rains. As development work was going on in many areas, piles of construction material were dumped on the roads. Water was flowing on the road as most of the drains remain clogged,” said the tourists.
Residents were also of similar opinion. They hoped that once the problems were rectified and development works were completed, they could lead a life like any metropolis.
