DHARWAD: Hosts JSS Banashankari College drubbed Jagadguru Gangadhara College of Commerce (JGCC), Hubbali, by a huge margin of 103 runs to lift the Karnatak University Inter-Collegiate Inter-Zonal Cricket title for 2024.
Required to score 199 for a win at the SDMCET Ground, JGCC batters failed to counter Prajwal Borannavar (4 for 14), Abhilash Balikayi (3 for 31), pacer Prajwal Shirol (2 for 30), and skipper Tejas Murdeshwar (1 for 13) and were reduced to a mere 99 in 15.5 overs. Only skipper Rohan Yereshimi (23) showed some resistance for JGCC.
Earlier, batting first, JSS Banashankari College registered a healthy score of 198 for 5 wickets in 20 overs, thanks to timely half centuries from the inform opener Mathew Nilugal (88) and the ‘Man of the Match’ Prajwal Borannavar (58). Sujal Patil (2 for 31) was the pick of the bowlers for the JGCC.
In the other match, Karnataka Arts College, Dharwad, defeated Anjuman Institute of Management in Computer Application (AIMCA), Bhatkal (Uttara Kannada), by 76 runs to secure the third spot.
Mathew Nilugal and Tejas Murdeshwar, with outstanding performances with the bat and the ball, were adjudged the ‘Best Batsman’ and the ‘Best Bowler’ respectively at the First Zone as well as the Inter Zonals. Ajay Shivalli of Karnatak Arts College was given the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award, while JSS opener Samyak Patil was adjudged the ‘Best Batsman’ of the First Zone.
Seven teams took part in the First Zone tournament organised by the JSS Banashankari Arts and Commerce College and Shantakumari Gubbi Science College, Dharwad, and eight teams in the Second Zone tournament organised by the JGCC, Hubballi. Two top teams from each group qualified for the inter-zonal tournament organised by JSS Banashankari College, Dharwad.
Dr. B M Patil, Director of Physical Education, Karnatak University, handed over the prizes to the winners at the concluding function. Dr. K H Nagachandra, principal of the host college, Dr. Shaukath Ali Magalmane, and Dr. R N Pattar, directors of physical education of various colleges, namely Dr. S G Koppad, Dr. Sharad Javali, Jinappa Kundagol, Shravankumar Yogi, Bahubali Chougala, and others, were present on the occasion.
