MUMBAI: In a dramatic turn of events, an accused arrested in connection with firing at the residence of Bollywood actor Salman Khan, who had allegedly attempted suicide while in police custody, has now been declared dead.
The deceased Anuj Thapan (23) hanged himself inside the toilet of the lock-up at Mumbai police’s crime branch using a bedsheet on Wednesday. He was rushed to the state-run GT Hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment, the official said.
An accidental death report will be registered at Azad Maidan police station in south Mumbai. Thapan was arrested from Punjab along with Sonu Kumar Bishnoi for allegedly supplying weapons to shooters Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, who were already arrested, according to police.
Confirming the development, Mumbai police stated, “One of the accused in DCB CID CR No. 39/2024, namely Anuj Thapan, has reportedly attempted suicide. He has been admitted to the hospital.”
Thapan, along with another accused, Sonu Subhash Chander (37), was arrested by Mumbai police in Punjab on April 25. The arrests followed the firing incident that occurred outside Salman Khan’s residence in Bandra, Mumbai, on April 14. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident when two motorcycle-laden assailants fired four rounds outside Galaxy Apartments.
The attack took place around 4.51 am when Salman Khan was present at his apartment. The police who swung into action arrested shooters Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal from Bhuj in Gujarat. Later,
Thapan and Chander were caught after the detained shooters divulged information regarding their alleged involvement in the crime.
The Mumbai police had invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against all the individuals involved in the crime.
