MANGALURU: As the water level recedes in the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies drinking water to Mangaluru city, Ullal, and Mulki, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to start water rationing from May 5, said Dakshina Kannada (DK) Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M P.
Water will now be supplied on alternate days to the Mangaluru city south and Surathkal areas instead of the daily supply.
Though the city has sufficient water until the end of May, the step has been taken as a precautionary measure. Water from the downstream Thumbe vented dam is being pumped back up to the dam, he told reporters here on Friday.
He said that there is 15.7 metres of water at AMR dam and 1.5 metres at Biliyoor dam. Industries have been barred from drawing water from the AMR dam, and only the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) has the authority to draw a minimum quantity of water for drinking purposes once every three days.
DC directs officials to identify alternative water sources
While chairing a meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee later, the DC directed officials to ensure that there was no shortage of drinking water in the district and slap a fine on those who found wasting water. He also asked them to set up control rooms and address grievances, if any, immediately, besides identifying alternative water sources.
“Water is already being supplied to Someshwara, Kotekar, and Ullal through tankers. In all, 11 tankers are supplying water to 21 affected wards in Ullal, two tankers are supplying water to five wards in Bantwal, three tankers are supplying water to seven wards in Mulki, and one tanker is supplying water to one ward in Moodbidri,” he added.
