Man accused of raping minor attacks police in Karnataka, shot in leg

HUBBALLI (KARNATAKA): A man, who was arrested under the POCSO Act and SC/ST (POA) Act for raping a minor girl, was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly attacked two policemen with a knife at Sutagatti here on Friday late at night.

Navanagar police arrested Saddam Hussain (19) on Friday night on charges of raping a minor girl, resulting in her pregnancy. While being brought to the Navanagar police station, he tried to escape from the police by stabbing Vidyagiri Police Inspector Sangamesh Bidiginal and another constable. The police soon shot a bullet in the air and another one in the leg of the accused, confirmed Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Rajeev M. 

Saddam Hussain has been admitted to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi with an injury to his leg, while the policemen are under treatment at Civil Hospital in Dharwad.

The victim’s mother accused the accused, Saddam Hussain, of forcibly having sexual contact with the girl after befriending her and threatening her later. She filed a police complaint with the Navanagar police station on Friday evening. The police arrested the accused within an hour and booked him under the POCSO Act and the SC/ST (POA) Act.
