Torrential rains, floods strike Indonesia, Afghanistan, Brazil; death toll continues to surge

JAKARTA: At least 28 individuals have lost their lives due to the devastating floods and landslides caused by the torrential downpour in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Four individuals remain unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue.

The province of West Sumatra in Indonesia experienced severe flooding and landslides due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the tragic loss of 28 lives. Currently, four individuals remain unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue, according to agencies.

“There are 28 people killed, and we are still searching for four others who are missing,” Abdul Malik, the chief of the provincial rescue team, told Reuters.

The BNPB, the national disaster management agency, stated that the flooding that occurred since Saturday night has resulted in mudflow in the Tanah Datar regency, impacting five sub-districts.

The latest evaluation conducted by it revealed that 84 housing units and 16 bridges were impacted by the disaster. Additionally, heavy machinery has been mobilized to accelerate the restoration of road access, the agency stated.

A state of emergency was declared in Afghanistan on Sunday after nearly 315 people were killed and over 1,600 others injured in devastating flash floods that ripped through multiple provinces of the country.

Labeling it a major humanitarian emergency, Afghan authorities have cautioned about the expanding chaos caused by the catastrophic floods.

Numerous people are missing following the intense rainfall on Friday, which resulted in powerful torrents of water and mud sweeping through villages and farmland in multiple provinces. The catastrophic flood not only caused destruction to healthcare facilities and essential infrastructure but also led to the wiping out of thousands of residences and livestock, authorities said.

The Taliban’s Ministry for Refugees said on Sunday that the death toll from flooding in northern Afghanistan was 315, with more than 1,600 people injured.

The rain persisted in Brazil on Sunday too, further saturating the already waterlogged southern region and exacerbating the suffering of flood victims, with the death toll currently standing at 136.

The civil defense agency of the country reported that the excessive rainfall from the previous week resulted in rivers overflowing in the agricultural state, resulting in 806 injuries and 125 individuals reported missing, in addition to the fatalities.

The flooding has impacted over two million individuals, resulting in the displacement of more than 537,000 people from their homes, with 81,000 seeking refuge in shelters.

According to the National Confederation of Municipalities, the floods resulted in the destruction or damage of over 92,000 homes.

With the heaviest downpours anticipated to occur from Sunday to Monday, state officials have cautioned people about the potential for increased flooding and landslides.
