UDUPI: A 37-year-old undertrial was found dead in Udupi jail near Hiriadka in Karnataka, officials said on Monday.

Deceased Anup Shetty was being tried for charges of murdering his business partner Ajendra Shetty in Kalavara village of Kundapur in July 2021.

According to officials, Anup had initially gone into hiding after allegedly killing Ajendra, but Udupi police apprehended him in Goa a few days later.

On Saturday, Shetty was found in an unconscious condition in the jail and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. The cause of death is suspected to be a cardiac arrest, said the doctors who attended to him.

Police are waiting for his postmortem report to ascertain the exact reason for the death.

On July 30, 2021, Ajendra Shetty, a financier, was hacked to death inside his office at Kalavara in Kundapur taluk, allegedly by Shetty. The incident came to light when the family members grew suspicious as Ajendra did not return home even after 11 pm that night. They rushed to his office, only to see him lying in a pool of blood. Shetty allegedly had some differences with Ajendra over some business deals.

Following Anup’s death in the Udupi Jail near Hiriyadka, the local Hiriyadka police have initiated an investigation under Section 176 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

Anup had been incarcerated since August 6, 2021, based on a court order from Kundapur.

Anup vomited and subsequently fell unconscious at 2.45 pm on May 11. Jail staff alerted jailor S A Shirol, who made arrangements to shift Anup to the District Government Hospital. However, the doctors declared him brought dead.
