BENGALURU: A debt-ridden woman allegedly strangled her landlady to death and fled with her jewellery in the Kengeri police station limits here recently.

The victim has been identified as Divya, and the police have apprehended the perpetrator, who has been identified as Monika (24).

The police said that the incident took place on May 10 at Divya’s house at Konasandra in the city. Monika, originally from Kolar district, had been employed as a data entry operator at a private company for the last year. She had been residing in a rented house owned by Gurumurthy, Divya’s husband, in Kengeri for the past three months.

Monika resided alone in the house, and her partner, whom she presented to the homeowner as her spouse, would frequently pay her visits.

According to police sources, the accused had taken a few loans to cover her expenses, in addition to needing funds to help her boyfriend buy a mini truck.

Monika required money to assist her boyfriend in purchasing a mini truck. Observing Divya adorned with jewelry and noticing her husband and in-laws departing for work in the morning, the suspect devised a plan to murder her and steal her jewelry.

On May 10, when Divya and her two-year-old baby were alone at home, the perpetrator surreptitiously approached Divya from behind and purportedly strangled her to death. The accused then took a 36-gram gold chain from Divya and left the scene, a police source added.
